The aim of treatment is to provide relief of pain and improve mobility.
In the early stages a conservative approach to treatment is adopted. This takes the form of modification of activity to avoid aggravation and may include reduction of impact loading activity and weight loss, if necessary.
Strenghtening exercises and anti-inflammatory medications may be helpful and in some cases the use of a walking aid can be beneficial
When conservative measures or no longer effective, surgical intervention may need to be considered.
