CONSTIPATION
Constipation is where the faeces in the lower bowel builds up and becomes trapped. This can case bloating, gas and discomfort. Constipation can occur as a result of a lack of dietary fibre, dehydration and medications. Nearly all patients on codeine medications will experience a degree of constipation.
Through gradually increasing the amount of fibre in your diet (if you do it too quickly it will make you bloated) you can help to relieve constipation. Foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, beans and pulses and wholemeal and seeded breads and cereals are all good sources of fibre.
Also drink plenty of fluids, about 2 litres every day. If your urine is clear, it is normally a good indicator that you are well hydrated.
For those who find that despite the increase of fibre and fluids that they still get constipated, fibre supplements and laxatives may help. Discuss this with you clinician.
